"Panther Ajun Jaga Aahe" is a Marathi-language book that I recently finished reading. Inspired by the Black Panther Party in the United States, young activists in Mumbai came together to raise their voices against caste-based discrimination, inequality, and injustice, and formed the Dalit Panther organization. This book presents a detailed account of how this organization resisted caste oppression and what eventually happened to it over time.
If we look from the beginning, after the Mahaparinirvana of B. R. Ambedkar on December 6, 1956, a major vacuum was created in the Dalit and oppressed people’s movement. Because of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s work, a society that had remained suppressed and marginalized for thousands of years awakened and stood firmly against the established social order. However, after his passing, the movement gradually began to lose momentum. In many villages, caste dominance again led to atrocities such as physical assaults, denial of access to public water sources, murders, and sexual violence.
Witnessing these injustices created deep unrest among educated youth inspired by Ambedkar’s ideas. Hands that had been writing rebellious literature through the medium of writing transformed into united organizational strength to challenge the oppressive social structure. During this period of uncertainty, when the question of naming the organization arose, the activists drew inspiration from the Black Panther movement in the United States and began their work under the name “Dalit Panther.”
This book presents a detailed historical account from the formation of the organization to its eventual disintegration, written by one of the founding members of the Dalit Panther movement. It is a valuable and engaging book that will certainly appeal not only to students of the humanities but also to general readers interested in social movements and history.
Even today, in our society and around us, many unjust incidents continue to occur that bring disgrace to humanity. Seeing these, every sensitive and aware heart feels restless — and within each such heart, there is a hidden Panther. The only need is to awaken it.
